How much does Renewable Natural Gas cost?
The cost of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) depends on the blend you choose. You can designate 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 per cent of the natural gas you use as RNG.1 You'll also receive a credit on the BC carbon tax on your bill, depending on the blend you choose.
RNG is affordable
RNG remains an affordable option to heat your home when compared with other renewable energy sources. The graph below shows the cost of a 100 per cent RNG blend for an average residential customer. If you choose a 5, 10, 25 or 50 per cent blend, the cost will be even lower.
Note: Natural gas use is typically measured in gigajoules (GJ). In order to compare the cost of natural gas and RNG with electricity, which is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), we did a conversion from GJ to kWh so we can compare the cost of all four in the same terms.
Average RNG cost
As of January 1, 2022, customers who choose to designate a percentage of their natural gas use as RNG will pay a rate of $13.808 per GJ for the Cost of Biomethane on their natural gas bill. Below we’ve calculated the additional cost for the different blends of RNG for the average customer.3
Based on an average annual usage of 90 GJ:
|Monthly Renewable Natural Gas cost||$2.62||$5.25||$13.12||$26.25||$52.50|
|Annual Renewable Natural Gas cost||$31||$63||$157||$315||$630|
Small commercial rate 2
Based on an average annual usage of 340 GJ:
|Monthly Renewable Natural Gas cost||$9.92||$19.83||$49.58||$99.16||$198.32|
|Annual Renewable Natural Gas cost||$119||$238||$595||$1,190||$2,380|
Large commercial rate 3
Based on an average annual usage of 3,770 GJ:
|Monthly Renewable Natural Gas cost||$109.95||$219.91||$549.77||$1,099.54||$2,199.07|
|Annual Renewable Natural Gas cost||$1,319||$2,639||$6,597||$13,194||$26,389|

1 Renewable Natural Gas is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities.
The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).
2 GHG equivalent of diverting waste from our landfills through recycling. Source: Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator. In the event FortisBC has an imbalance between the demand for Renewable Natural Gas and the supply, FortisBC may purchase offsets to retain the equivalent greenhouse gas reductions that you would receive from the Renewable Natural Gas supply.
3 Renewable Natural Gas rate is subject to yearly rate adjustments and conventional natural gas rate is subject to quarterly rate adjustments. The BC carbon tax on natural gas, which is set by the provincial government and collected by FortisBC on their behalf, is also subject to periodic adjustments.
